Third Floor Advisors

Overview

Liz and Matt are a mother and son team who help students reach their academic goals through the college and graduate school admissions application development process. They believe in helping students identify the principal themes that have motivated their curricular and co-curricular experiences and highlight those themes in their applications.

For close to two decades, Liz has informally advised students in the college and graduate school admissions processes. She has worked with students to shape their application narratives, prepared students for interviews, and reviewed and discussed application essays. Liz has helped many students discover and express the narratives that serve as the throughlines in their academic and professional application processes.

Having recently successfully applied to college and law school, Matt brings the student experience and perspective to Third Floor Advisors. A desire to help other students maximize their academic opportunities led Matt to serve as a peer writing tutor during high school and an LSAT tutor currently. Matt also brings his editing expertise and experience to bear on the student essay development and writing processes.

Our Services

Admissions Application Development

We believe that crafting applications is about describing applicants’ curiosities and how they engage with them. We help applicants articulate and frame their interests in compelling and digestible narratives that illuminate the most salient components of who our clients are as thinkers and as people. This framing may take place in the midst of application drafting, at the beginning of an admissions cycle, or even well before students become applicants—as they develop and refine their personal educational directions.

Essay Assistance

We offer essay assistance throughout the essay-drafting and -review process. Our emphasis is on supporting applicants in the development of meaningful essay topics and helping them refine the structure and organization of their essays to help ensure that their narratives come through clearly.

Interview Preparation

We provide personal, detailed, and thoughtful preparation for admissions and job interviews. Before, during, and after conducting mock interviews with our clients, we engage in discussions that help applicants prepare for their interviews with a thorough understanding of the context and likely lines of questioning they may encounter. We run through scenarios that may arise and offer suggestions that allow applicants to feel prepared to respond to a wide variety of interview questions. We provide specific advice relative to the particular context and category of the interview, including tips and traps that are particularly helpful for in-person and virtual interviews.

LSAT Tutoring

Matt is our resident LSAT tutor. He carefully tailors LSAT preparation to the strengths and needs of each student. In addition to instructing students on the substance of the LSAT, Matt sets out detailed, flexible personal study plans that provide students with rigorous but manageable study targets that keep them on track throughout their LSAT preparation. Matt scored a 174 on the exam and was admitted to Harvard Law School through the school’s Junior Deferral Program.
